Hate Crimes Charges Urged For Six Accused in Torture Case

CHARLESTON, West Virginia (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered at West Virginia’s Capitol on Saturday to urge prosecutors to add hate crime charges against six white people charged in the beating, torture and sexual assault of a 20-year-old black woman.
Authorities say the accused, three men and three women, held Megan Williams captive for days at a rural trailer — sexually assaulting her, beating her and forcing her to eat human and animal feces.
“Hate crimes are out of control in America,” Malik Shabazz, a legal adviser to Williams and her family and a founder of Black Lawyers for Justice, told the group.
“Nooses are being hung and our women are being raped by white moms. What happened to Megan Williams was a hate crime and we want this prosecuted as a hate crime.”
Shabazz pointed to statements from suspect Frankie Brewster and her son, Bobby Brewster, that racial epithets were used every time Williams was stabbed.
If this event is deemed worthy of so-called “hate crimes”….what about Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom? HOW MUCH MORE ??????

Sometimes I wonder whether or not charging people with hate crimes is doing anything for the problem of racism at all. We need to get rid of this idea of crime against race and get down to what this really is: crime against another human being. You know what? Maybe this was a racist crime. But I don’t see why that makes it any different than any other crime against another human being. These guys were messed up. If there were no black people for them to prey on, then they would’ve picked a woman of any other race. If the black community or any other minority community what this stuff to stop happening, they need to quit segregating themselves with all of this special treatment. It’s 2007! Racists are recognized as scum by the general populous of America, not just the black community. Now I just have to hope that no one out there takes this as hate speech, or I’m in trouble. ….ps.. this isn’t hate speech..
Yes, thank you JRDevo, I was just going to post that same question. Five black men and a black woman kidnapped, gang raped, tortured, mutilated, burned and murdered two young white people who were out on a date, but the powers that be decided it was “not a hate crime.” WTH??? If that’s not a hate crime, I don’t know what is. Channon Christian suffered for several days at the hands of these animals while dozens of black people from the community came in and out of the torture house, some even filming it on their cellphone cameras. No one called the police. No one helped these two kids, whose only crime is that they were white. The media has done a total blackout on it because BLACK ON WHITE HATE CRIMES don’t jive with the agenda of the leftist media. We also didn’t hear a peep out of Jesse or Al and there were NO black groups gathering to protest this heinous crime against innocent people.
The only groups who are giving any attention to this case at all are the White Supremicist groups, and the families of the victims are loathe to be associated with such evil and ignorance. Sadly, unless and until BOTH the black and the white communities in America stand together and stand up to this one-sided victim fest, there will be further racial polarization than there already is. Anyone who is feeling happy about that and cheering it on is very short-sighted and stupid, and is in for a rude awakening.
Jack - Agreed. The woman was raped, stabbed, beaten, etc. It is just a sick crime, period.
All crimes committed against another human being are hate crimes; if someone kills, rapes, tortures, etc. another person that is a crime of hate, regardless of the “race,” of that person. There was an incedent in Knoxvill, TN. in which four black people kidnapped, tortured, mutilated and repetedly raped a white couple before desecrating their bodies. This incedent was strangely ignored by the media. If Megan Williams’s case is to be considered a hate crime, then why not the Knoxville case? Why was that case ignored by the media? I’m no racist but I’m beginning to see a heavy double standard, and I think that the racial division in this country is getting seriously out of hand.
It’s called reverse racism. I am not racist, but I am tired of people assuming that only white people can be racist. It’s not true! Every race can be racist, but only white people seem to be prosecuted for it. This country is ridiculous when it comes to racism.
I do agree with you about the reverse racism. There are alot of black people that commit crimes against whites and are not charged with a hate crime, just the crime itself. I think all crimes should be prosecuted under the same standards, regardless of race. It should be not made an issue of. OJ Simpson had a relationship with Nicole Brown yet he was never charged with a “hate” crime. It can be a very touchy subject and I think they should take the hate crime aspect out of things and just prosecute people the same.
Honestly, attaching labels such as “hate crime” to atrocities like this only fuels the whole issue of racism — and it is raging.
I can’t think of a single person, black or white, that was not sickened by this - - and no one believes that these twisted bastards should ever see the outside of a prison again. So why tag the crime with a label? Now they have created a controversy that does not need to exist and almost uncdoubtedly we will see some sort of retaliation crime.
The media will work this into a heated frenzy until we are all pissed off at people of a different color and the breeding of hatred will continue, sadly.
What I find ironic is that there is actually a need for “racial intimidation” laws - - hanging a noose in a tree is clearly an attempt to intimidate black people and this kind of thing should be addressed, but blurring these lines with a racial motive to beat, rape, and kill seems ignorant. An act of violence needs to be judged on its hatred of human life, not the name calling that ensued - -
I don’t care how they classify the crime as long as they send the guilty to prison for a long time. To think that ANY mom, white or black, could do that to another woman is beyond comprehension to me. I just pray that all the publicity from it for her will not hurt her case. She is smiling in the picture and doesn’t look traumatized, so to speak. I am sure she truly is but juries have a way of blaming the victim and if she doesn’t show the emotion, they may get away with it. Sad but true. Anyways, regardless of how they classify it, I hope these people are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. No one, and I mean no one black or white, should ever be made to go thru what this young lady did. It makes me sick that anyone would have that twisted of a mind to do this to someone.
I don’t think any jury would take pity on this case. You would have to be as sick as the people that committed the crime. These bastards really need to rot in hell.
We talked about this on my radio show this weekend, and got some interesting feedback on the show. One of our listeners who happened to be a black man indicated that given the racial climate of the past, “Hate Crimes” still exist as a legal standing. His point now is that if, for an example, someone burns a cross on a black man’s lawn, it’s not only a crime but meant to intimidate people of a specific race in the neighborhood. While the point there is valid, ultimately it’s not the 60s anymore.
To me, this is a “Hate Crime” as defined by law. That being said, it should simply be a “Crime”. I think instead of needed to tag a label to make the penalty heavier, they should simply make the penalties heavier across the board. For something like this crime - death penalty…the same death penalty this should be if it was 6 blacks on a white, 6 Puerto Ricans on a Jew, or members of six different races doing this to someone you can’t define because they were mutilated too badly.
And maybe we don’t wait to execute any longer. At what point do we say mandatory trial date for any crime within 30 days, trial can last no longer than 5 days, and an appeal can only happen within one month of the end of the last trial. If guilty both times, execution the next day. Maybe that’s not a deterrent for committing crimes, but it sure saves a lot of wasted money and extended pain to the family of a victim.
