Economic Fears Hammer Wall Street

US stocks plunged today as weak retail results and data suggesting mounting job losses heightened fears on the economy, with the Dow industrials skidding 347 points (3.0 per cent) to 11,185.22 at the closing bell.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average skidded 345.54 points (3.0 per cent) to 11,187.34 at the closing bell and the Nasdaq composite slid 74.69 points (3.2 per cent) to 2259.04.

The broad-market Standard & Poor’s 500 index shed 38.20 points (3.0 per cent) to a preliminary close of 1236.78.
